The Great 8 - Tip #1 Defensive Driving Course

The Defensive Driving Course is the most universal and non-discriminatory way to save on auto insurance.

EVERYONE (good drivers or not so good!) is eligible to reap its benefits. (Well…there is an exception if you're forced to because of your driver's record! But we know that's not you!)

You'll only need to commit six hours to take the class online or in a classroom near you.

The course is technically called the "
New York Point and Insurance Reduction Program" (PIRP for short).

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles designed the course to help people reduce "points" on their licenses. However, an ancillary benefit was also reducing the base rate of your auto and motorcycle premiums.

Most people take the course to reduce the cost of their insurance. And the cost reduction is real.

The six-hour course results in a 10% discount applied to the majority of your car insurance coverage parts and can add up over three (3) years.

    • A real-world example works like this:
    • Current Annual Premium before taking the Defensive Driver Course = $1,200
    • Annual Discount for taking the course = $100
    • Total Discount over three (3) years = $300

If you'd like to know how much you would save, call us! We would be happy to see what the result is for your exact situation.

Most of the courses available cost $40 or less. At that rate, most policyholders can realize a significant return on their investment in time and money.

Where can you take the course? We recommend taking the course from the comfort of your home, right on your computer.
Improv provides the company with the most flexible and enjoyable class, allowing you to start and stop the course over 30 days at your own pace and when you have the time.

Would you prefer a classroom experience? Numerous
classroom providers are available. For more information about classes that are available locally, please contact our office.

Regardless of your driving tenure or skill, the Defensive Driving Course (or PIRP) is one of the most effective and attractive ways to
SaveSmart on your car insurance for the next three years!

The year 1962 was marked by historic events—from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the passing of Marilyn Monroe. But while the world focused on these headlines, Lee A. Ryan was working alongside his brothers on my grandparents' farm when an unexpected opportunity arose—an invitation to join the insurance business. With no prior experience, no clients, and limited resources, my dad took a leap of faith and partnered with Nationwide Insurance to start an agency from scratch. Operating out of his home on Karr Valley Road in Almond, NY, he built his business one relationship at a time (some of whom are still clients!), laying the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy.

Many don’t realize that the insurance industry is one of the country's most regulated business segments, especially in New York State. The New York State Department of Financial Services (NYS DFS) wields significant control over the insurance business and has a stated goal of protecting consumers.

Most property insurance companies offer Actual Cash Value or Replacement Cost settlement options. Typically, insurance companies will require that you insure the property to the settlement value you choose. If you select Actual Cash Value, the amount you may be required to insure the property for will be less than the corresponding Replacement Value.

Today, an individual’s credit history can play a more significant role than any one of those traditional factors. Good Credit Scores lead to a Positive Insurance score. A good Insurance Score greatly influences what someone will pay to insure their vehicles.

Sometimes, this concept meets with resistance from policyholders. The thought of paying more in the event of a claim is off-putting to some. Even if that means I pay more for my insurance.
